Life in Dulwich is not so swell

I'm so sad. I got off the bus - not half an hour ago, and as I got up, my Ipod unplugged itself from my headphones. Thinking nothing of it, I got off the bus and then realised that the Ipod had fallen out of my pocket and onto the seat of the bus.

I jumped into the car - dragging poor BB out of the house to chase after the bus. We caught up with it in Norwood but by then the Ipod was gone and noone had handed it into the driver.

I'm so sad. How life can go from being all happy and pleased with things in general and feeling virtuous for having gone to the gym and thinking about what to have for dinner - to - how stupid I am, I'm so sad.

BB says it's just stuff, which is true. But it's still sad.

At last

I had my first auditions since getting back from Germany - finally.

The first was a wash-out. It was an audition for Wrigleys but when I got there it turned out I wouldn't be around for the shoot dates. Sheesh... what a waste of time.

Second one was for Love Soup, a new BBC comedy with Tamsin Greig in. Would be swell to get the job - especially to see Tammy again, as haven't seen her since university.

Another one tomorrow - please god, let me get at least one of these jobs.

It was altogether rather stressful as I kept having to leave work in a hurry and then dash back again. Far too much walking involved, and catching tubes, and buses and running around.

Am quite excited though as I have just purchased Tom McRae's new album, All Maps Welcome and the Astor Piazolla DVD about his life. They only get released in 10 days though, so I'll have to be patient and think about my holiday instead...

Fed up...

...with horrible London weather. All grey and grim and causes the interminable journey from home to work to be even worse.

However, I'm all fed up in a nice way with a rather palatable chicken rice we made last night. Cooked the rice with some left over chicken juice from Tuesday's roast chicken leg dinner and steamed a couple of juicy free range breasts with tons of ginger, sesame oil, spring onions and salt. Blanched the beansprouts in steamed chicken water. Mixed up some steamed chicken water with light soya sauce and sesame oil and poured over steamed chicken and beansprouts. Added some cucumber slices. Spring onions in the remaining chicken water with white pepper for soup. And Bob's your uncle (or aunt as the case may be).

And the best thing is there's some left over for lunch today. Hurrah!

Strange sensations

My right cheek has been numb and tingly on and off for two days. I also had headache last night and am ravenously hungry all the time. I hope I haven't got a brain tumour. (Not that I'm alarmist or anything.)

I've been drinking heaps of water and eating lots of veg and tofu and other stuff.

It's all very strange.

"Pho"-eey

Vietnamese beef noodle soup. That's what this is all about. Terrible pun I know.

It's all because I tried to make said soup last night. Such a simple dish and yet not. I had all the right ingredients - thinly sliced beef, beef balls, coriander, basil, mint, noodles... and yet, the parts did not make much of a sum.

The trouble is I guess I don't have all the beef bones that need boiling up for hours to make a good stock. Or the time to do said boiling. Also, the kind of beef I can get hold of tends to be sadly inadequate - even the organic, ready thin sliced beef I bought from Fresh & Wild. Not thin enough and tastes a bit funny. Going in search of a wonder butcher seems like too much hard work.

I guess I'll just have to stick to the Vietnamese restaurant on Wardour Street called - wait for it - Vietnamese Restaurant.

I doubt it's the best in town - all the reviews rave on about the ones near Old Street station. But they certainly do the best pho I've ever had. Mmmmm.

Lovely steamy, clear tasty stock. Thin noodles. Thin, thin, thin sliced beef. Hot, hot, hot green chillies. Heaps of beansprouts, mint and coriander to tear up with your fingers and add to the dish. It all tastes fresh, fresh, fresh! And all for the princely sum of £3.80.

I just thought they might think I'm a lunatic as I'm there all the time. Talking about the hot green chillies. They're a bit of a hit and miss affair in the hottometer. Sometimes they're fairly mild and a bit of a disappointment but once they were so hot I went deaf in one ear and half of my face went numb for a few hours. Ah, but what pleasure.

It's also quite interesting eating there because the family who own the place sit around all day eating, arguing (in a familial sort of fashion) and generally acting out their lives before the world, oblivious to all and sundry. The matriarch (she's not that old) frequently harangues the grandfather and various teenage sons who reply in grumbles and protestations.

Ah me. It makes me smile.
